The tradition continues at Sweetgrass Rods;
crafting fine bamboo fly fishing rods

Spey Rods from Sweetgrass RodsWhen Glenn and Dave went to China, the one thing they could not get over was the sheer variety of uses for bamboo.  From scaffolding on high-rise buildings, to fencing and flooring materials, to irrigation pipe and electrical conduit, to fishing rafts, to good, old-fashioned walking sticks…the range of uses seemed endless.   A remarkable material, indeed.

At Sweetgrass, bamboo lends itself to multiple types of fishing rods as well.  While 95% of the rods we make fall into the Sweetgrass and Mantra categories of trout rods, we enjoy a good challenge and have made several unconventional types of rods with bamboo as well.

Saltwater Rods
:  Essentially, these rods are a Mantra rod with an added fighting butt and a salt-water appropriate reel seat, and different wraps.  Most of what we have made so far has ranged from 8' to 9'3" in length, in weights from 6 to 12.  We have made a rod for Dorado and a rod for small Marlin, but the most frequent request is for rods appropriate for bonefish, snook, and speckled trout.

Spey Rods:  Tell us what you have in mind, and we can build something for you.  So far, our run of bamboo spey rods has been primarily with rods between 11'6" and 12'6", and in the 400 grain range.  Our rods are ferruled with large nickel silver ferrules.

Competition Rods:  You know what you need to compete.  We can build it for you! Just a couple years ago, Michael Mauri won the Hardy Cup with a specially design Sweetgrass Rod  (story link). When it comes to customizing a bamboo rod for competition, Sweetgrass Rods has the skill and experience to create your masterpiece.

Switch rods:  From a 9'6" #5 to a 10'6" #8, adding a fighting butt to a longer rod helps facilitate holding the rod with two hands while balancing the longer, heavier rod.

Spinning/Casting Rods:  We have made spinning and casting rods in lengths from 6' to 6'6".  A deeper flexing rod is as valuable to a casting fisherman as a fly fisherman. Letting the rod do some of the work puts a little extra joy in the day, and fighting a fish hooked on a Rapalla or a Mepps feels amazing through the cane.

The bottom line is this:  if you can dream it, we want to try to make it with BAMBOO!!
